FILM

THE WOLF OF WALLSTREET
Leonardo Di Caprio had it a bit tough against Matthew McConaughey´s performance in Dallas Buyers Club at the 2014 Oscars. My personal view is that Di Caprio was a very worthy winner with his brilliant performance of Stratton Oakmonts Jordan Belfort. I was in stiches and especially impressed when Di Caprio is trying to crawl back out from the hotel in to his Ferrari high on benzos. The master himself, Mr Martin Scorsese, produced a very (long) entertaining film about what the peeps on Wall Street did (and still do) with our savings and investments through the man nicknamed The Wolf of Wallstreet.

REASONABLE DOUBT
Dominic Cooper, one of Hollywoods up coming stars is faced against Hollywood cult hero Samuel L. Jackson in a very smart and well made thriller. With lots of twists and turns that works and keeps you on your toes, this is a movie made to entertain. It also reminds you of how scary todays society can be and the truth and actions that goes with it – A nail biting thriller!

MORE THAN HONEY
Switzerland´s contribution to this years Oscar awards should be screened at all schools worldwide. A documentary about the honeybee colonies in Australia, California, China and Switzerland with a surprise. Albert Einstein once said that if all the bee´s in the world would die, humanity would be wiped out within four years.

THE QUIET ROAR
A film with an amazing artful opening and beautiful photography all the way through. This capture brings you on a journey that is a bit dull even though the casting was well executed.  Marianne, a 68-year old woman played by the beautiful Evabritt Strandberg is close to the end of her circle and looks back on what seems to be a depressed life. Diagnosed with a terminal disease she undergoes a modern special treatment with Psilocybin (The active ingredient in magic mushrooms) and hollows down memory lane with various feelings of her life, husband and children. As the film starts I asked myself as I do daily what is reality and what is reality based on? Henrik Hellström´s film gave me a different experience to that I was expecting (and hoping for). In an opening line they ask the audience to sit back and relax and just to take it all in. That it is not necessary to always ask questions and understand, you don´t always have to find solutions. That is very true, but in my mind, the film actually asked and presented lots of questions within different subjects and underlined meanings. I could not resist thinking about them all while I was laid back relaxing, dozing away in my armchair. Filmed in the Gulf region of Rogaland, Norway with Swedish products inserted everywhere they also made the following obvious; all females had short hair, except The Goddess herself, played by German icon Hanna Schygulla and a girl plays a boys role. Are they making statements and asking if it should matter what gender plays what role? That a child is a child? I don´t think it matters, but I am curious to why? Is it a statement or is it as they say, it just is?

LONE RANGER
Being one of my boyhood favorites together with The Black Stallion, The A-Team, Airwolf, CHiPs, Dukes of Hazzard and all the other classics. I think this remake even disappointed the kids of today!  It was just plain silly that disappointed everyone and most likely damaged Johnny Depp’s reputation even more. Bring in Christopher Nolan and make a cutting edge dark production and save the name of this cult series.

MILKO II – THREE MINUTE TEASE
Simple, amazing, brilliant tune with top lyrics. Lay back, close your eyes, sip on your whisky, light a fag and just enjoy!

KIESZA – HIDEAWAY
With a similar sound to other top hits being played on international radio like My Love – Route 94, Waiting all Night – Rudimental, If Your Gonna Move – Jessie Ware and more I think this one comes out on top!  A beautiful voice combined with a sweet move your feet beat! Duke Dumond has done a fat recommended mix on Kiesza´s Hideaway together with Route 94´s – My Love.

BEATRICE ELI – GIRLS
On the 21st of March, Razzia Records released Swedish artist Beatrice Eli latest single; GIRLS. It’s a song about sexuality, desire and honesty from a perspective that is underrepresented in pop music during a difficult period of writer´s block. A good tune with a lot of recognisable influences combined with a well-made video directed by Senay Berhe with what to seems a little or no budget at all!

C O L L E A G U E S  – “TEARS” + “PARENTS’ HOUSE”
Eken Magazine first wrote about this new Swedish Band after we saw them perform a couple of songs live at a pretty cool Vice-Noisey event in collaboration with Philips; “You Need To Hear This” in Stockholm last November. Calling them Novembers warmest band the five-man-band have now released their California inspired first single; “Tears” and “Parents’ House” under label Fierce Panda at Stereo Records.

FOOD & DRINK

FLIPPIN BURGERS – STOCKHOLM
I thought a good two years would get all the wanna-be hipsters and pretentious fools away and make time to just enjoy a burger without it being an image statement! Well a tasty burger it was, topped with a friendly service. Unfortunately to small burgers for my liking especially at that price and nothing really special about their fries and dip, we didn’t even finish them off. Score is mostly based on the taste of the burger and their good service.

O´LEARYS – SUNDBYBERG, STOCKHOLM
Not been to this restaurant franchise chain for ages. O’Learys use to be the place to be for burger and beers in town. Now that was about ten years ago and it goes to show how things and time changes. Even O`Learys flagship restaurant in Slussen has been closed down a few years now with no new tenant. But back to the burger, I popped in to watch the footie with a mate and even though I got the wrong burger  to what I ordered (Founders Choice), Ray´s Hot Chili Burger was a pleasant spicy surprise. Very good service combined with a well planned restaurant puts this specific O´Learys back on the map!

STHLM TAPAS – TORSGATAN, STOCKHOLM
With a high-end friendly international service where the chef´s wave hi from the kitchen and the waiters sit down next to you and talk you through the menu in either Swedish or English. STHLM TAPAS is a top place with a buzz for either your AfterWork or just for a bite to eat with your partner. With a little twist to their menu, they offer an international tapas mix with influences from Spain, Italy and Sweden. A nice little act from them was when they did not have gluten bread they picked up on us pointing out that a bread store is around the corner, they then “surprised us” and went and bought it especially for our table. Their red house wine Oude Kaap 2013, costing 59:- for a glass or 235kr a bottle is a winner! For next time I am hoping on slightly larger portions to go with their prices.
p.s. Don´t forget to taste their aioli, it´s amazing!

BISTRO BURGER – STOCKHOLM
I cannot think of anything good during my visit to another burger craze joint! My partner could not even finish off her burger. After just trying Flipping Burgers for the first time, this place is just an outright rubbish copy of the very popular hamburger spot! The menu, the prices are nearly exactly the same, but without the creativity of various burgers. These guys just change a cucumber for a jalapeño and they think they got a completely new burger! The one and only star is for an alright decent service.
