GODS POCKET | REVIEW | PETER A ELDON | EKEN MAGAZINE

A crime drama full of black comedy and twists set during the 1980´s in the grim neighbourhood “Gods Pocket” of Philadelphia. Mickey Scarpato (played by the brilliant and late Philip Seymour Hoffman in his last completed role), a blue-collar worker with ties to the mob is married to the beautiful Jeanie Scarpato played by the adorable Christine Hendricks. Jeanie doesn´t believe her son Leon (Caleb Landry Jones) died in a construction accident and leaves it to Mickey to sort it out and arrange the funeral with money he doesn´t have. This leads into several issues and challenges for Mickey and how he is going to handle it all in the strange but close knitted Gods Pockets as an outsider. Superb supporting roles with the likes of Richard Jenkins acting as the alcoholic two-timing cult hero reporter Richard Shellburn. Acting as Mickey’s best friend is John Turturro as “Bird” who works in his mum’s flower-shop while hustling and gambling from behind the counter. The highlight of the film with out saying to much is when Birds mother played by Joyce Van Patten, takes charge of the situation when the mob visits her flower shop. This film is a faithful adaptation of Pete Dexter’s 1983 novel.
