THE END OF THE TOUR. 2015.

3 STARS - REVIEW SCORE - EKEN MAGAZINE

A masterpiece of intriguing storytelling

Based upon the captivating and best selling memoirs, Although of Course You End up Becoming Yourself, by David Lipsky, The End of The Tour movie is a beautiful and eye-opening insight into famous author David Wallace and the struggles of feeling so lonely in a world where everyone knows your name.

Having found himself gripped by the sensational novel written by David Foster Wallace (Jason Segel), David Lipsky (Jesse Eisenberg) is saddened to hear the news of Wallace’s suicide and can’t help but return to his memories of when he first interviewed the man 12 years before. The story goes through the 5 days they spent together and the blossoming of an unlikely relationship between journalist and interviewee. Whilst the audio tapes begin to unravel some information about the man behind the acclaimed bestseller, the undocumented discussions shed light on the dark pasts of both men without ever really being able to divulge everything in their new friendship.

The movie is beautifully captured in the moments of the mastery by Jesse Eisenberg and Jason Segel in their leading roles. The two men effortlessly pull on the heartstrings of their audience with the intimacy of their relationship and the soul-baring facts of life they share with one another, whilst muddying the line between wanting to normal but the prying eyes of the world seeing you as extraordinary.

The movie is a masterpiece of intriguing storytelling and the look into a life of a man wanting to be ordinary in the world in spite of his rise to fame. It is a movie certainly worth watching and seeing and encapsulates you from beginning to end.

“Well, I think being shy basically means being self-absorbed to the extent that it makes it difficult to be around other people.” – David Foster Wallace
